Do you smell ammonia? That’s normal!
Our Cod Fish Chips come from Iceland and are processed the same day they are caught. We never use any type of preservative, and the process is natural: we air-dry everything. Air drying naturally preserves the fish meat and skin, keeping it full of flavor and nutrition.
The cod mince, or “chips,” are the little pieces of cod that come off the fish when it’s filleted. That mince is then formed into the chip or patty you see today. What you’re smelling is the natural scent of ammonia that comes off any ground fish that is naturally preserved rather than cooked. It’s completely harmless and will dissipate as the bag stays open to oxygen.
Please rest assured that this is normal and shows we follow the best process for making our treats. Fish treats are considered a delicacy in Iceland, and the ammonia smell is part of the culture. We agree the initial smell can be a bit shocking, and it will vary from bag to bag, but it’s a normal part of the experience, albeit an interesting one.
